SpiceJet: Toilet Door Malfunction
A male passenger was flying from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) to Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport (BLR). He opted for a SpiceJet flight for his journey. He was sitting on seat 14D. The flight SG 268 departed Mumbai Airport at 02:00 AM. After the seat belt sign was turned off, the passenger decided to go to the toilet.
When he tried to open the lavatory door, he was unable to do so. The door developed some sort of malfunction. Lavatory doors can develop several sorts of issues like mechanical failure, electrical failure, or even latch jamming. Such issues require the presence of an engineer to rectify them.
The passenger was trapped inside the toilet. He called the cabin crew. After listening to his frightened calls, the cabin crew from outside the lavatory tried to open the door but to their surprise, they were unable to open it. The passenger had to remain inside the toilet for more than one hour. In order to comfort the passenger, they passed a note to him through the gaps in the lavatory door.
In the note, the cabin crew said that they had tried their best to open the door but failed to do so. Soon, the aircraft will be landing and with the assistance of an engineer, the door will be opened. They requested the passenger to close the commode lid and sit on it in order to secure himself.
Finally!! The Door Opened
The aircraft landed at Bengaluru Kempegowda International Airport at 03:42 AM. As soon as the aircraft landed, an engineer rushed to the aircraft and opened the lavatory door by breaking it. The passenger came out in a state of shock. He was traumatized due to claustrophobia. He was subjected to medical support in order to address his well-being.
In a statement, a spokesperson from SpiceJet said that the door unfortunately got stuck for about an hour due to a malfunction in the door lock mechanism. The cabin crew provided assistance and guidance throughout the journey. The airline said that it would issue a full refund to the passenger for the inconvenience he faced.
