Air India Airbus A320 stuck again!
Fuselage of a scrapped Air India Airbus A320 aircraft was being transported from Mumbai to Assam for conversion into an aircraft restaurant. During transportation, the aircraft got stuck under an overbridge in Bihar’s East Champaran District. To be exact, the aircraft stuck under Piprakothi bridge in Motihari. For about an hour, the aircraft was stuck resulting in traffic jam on National Highway NH 27. Around 09:00 AM, police reached at the spot. As expected, the truck got out of this situation by deflating the tyres.
As per a police official, the driver of the truck misjudged the height of overbridge and consignment he is carrying. He expected that it will pass but it did not. As a result, it stuck under the bridge.
About the Aircraft and Restaurant
This is an old trend that restaurant owners buys fuselage of old scrapped aircraft and convert them into fancy restaurants. This is also a similar case. The aircraft involved in this incident is an Airbus A320-200 registered as VT-ESL. It conducted first ever flight on 27 September, 1994. It was initially delivered to Indian Airlines in December 1994. When Indian Airlines merged with Air India in 2007, this aircraft was inherited to Air India. Its seating configuration was changed from 20 Business/126 Economy Class seats to all economy 168 seats. In June 2019, the airline retired this aircraft.
During its lifetime, it has been involved in 3 major incidents. They are:
- Oct 1999 : Runway excursion at Yangon Airport
- Mar 2016 : Tyre blowout at Mumbai Airport
- Jun 2017 : Runway excursion at Jammu Airport
Now, the aircraft is being transported to Assam as a renowned boutique resort named Zoonskya has acquired it to convert into a restaurant. This is going to be the first ever aircraft restaurant for the state of Assam.
In end of every year, an Air India fuselage gets stuck. October 2021, November 2022 and now December 2023.
In October 2021, a Air India fuselage got stuck underneath a bridge in Gurgaon near Delhi Airport. Similarly, in November 2022, aircraft registered as VT-ESB stuck under the Medaramrtla flyover in Bapatla. It was being transported from Hyderabad to Cochi. VT-ESB was acquired by Pista House.
