The end of 2023 was a fairy tale for Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport as the airport recorded the highest-ever number of passengers in December month. Looking at these statistics, one can easily say that the airport has recovered from the pandemic.
December: Record Month for Mumbai Airport
In December 2023, Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport handled a total of 4.88 million passengers. On a yearly basis, the number of passengers handled by the airport has registered a growth of 13 percent. In December 2022, the airport handled 4.33 million passengers. When compared to December month of 2018, the airport has registered a growth of 112 percent. In December 2018, the airport handled 4.37 million.
On December 16, the airport handled 1,65,258 passengers, including 84,166 arrivals and 81,092 departures. This was the highest number of passengers in a single day in December month. The airport had 28,462 Air Traffic Movements in December month. Out of this, 7,287 were international movements and the remaining 21,175 were domestic ones.
For Mumbai Airport, the top domestic destinations in December month were Delhi, Bengaluru, and Goa. On the other hand, top international destinations included Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi.
The airport has been connected to a new country – Kazakhstan. FlyArystan, a low-cost subsidiary of Air Astana has started flights to Mumbai.4 days later, on January 15th, Mumbai will be connected to Ayodhya Airport as well.
In upcoming March, Vistara will add one more European destination from Mumbai to its Network Map with five times weekly flights to Paris. Air India has added flights from Mumbai to Melbourne with effect from December 15.
Back-to-back Record Months
Similar to December, November was also a robust month for Mumbai Airport. In November, the airport achieved two major milestones. It recorded the highest-ever traffic handled, which has now been broken. Apart from this, in November, the airport recorded the highest ever Air Traffic Movements.
In November, Mumbai Airport handled a total of 4.46 million passengers. On November 25, the airport handled the highest number of passengers – 1,67,132. It recorded the highest ever Air Traffic Movements on November 11, reaching a total of 1,032. Similar to December, international destinations were Dubai, London, and Abu Dhabi. The top domestic destinations were Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai.
