Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines has announced its plans to commence non-stop flights between Shanghai and Athens. The airline decided to commence this route in 2019 itself but because of the COVID-19 pandemic, these plans were grounded.
Juneyao Airlines to connect Shanghai and Athens
Shanghai-based carrier Juneyao Airlines has announced direct flights connecting Shanghai to Athens. This flight is going to be the third intercontinental service for Juneyao Airlines. The airline currently operates to Milan and Helsinki. It started services between Zhengzhou and Milan Malpensa just last month.
With effect from 2 April, 2024, Juneyao will connect Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport in Greece with frequency of three times weekly.
Aircraft will operate on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. It will deploy the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner jet for this long haul route. The airline Boeing 787 fleet consists of 29 Business Class Seats and 295 Economy Class Seats.
Here is a close look at the timings :
HO 1657 : Departs Shanghai Airport at 01:55 AM and reaches Athens Airport at 08:55 AM.
HO 1658 : Departs Athens Airport at 01:45 PM and arrives at Shanghai Airport at 05:05 AM.
This is going to be the third intercontinental service for the airline. Apart from that, it is going to be the 4th long haul route to be operated by the airline. Currently, it operates on 3 long haul routes. These are :
- Milan to Zhengzhou
- Helsinki to Zhengzhou
- Helsinki to Shanghai
With initiation of this route, Juneyao Airlines will be the only airline to be operating on this. This will help exchange of trade and cultural tourism between Europe and China.
President of Juneyao Airlines, Yu Chengji said that this route was originally planned to be started in 2019. He added that he still remembers the agreement signed on Aegean Sea Trip. He expressed enthusiasm that the airline is finally starting this route.
According to Ioanna Papadopoulou, director of marketing communications at Athens International Airport, Shanghai has emerged as the favorite departure location for transfer travelers to Athens, and the Chinese market is of significant strategic importance to them. Therefore, Juneyao Airlines’ opening of flights from Athens to Shanghai will bring significant development opportunities to airports in Greece.
She added – This is a very exciting development for our airport, our nation, our city, and of course, the traveling public. Through the airline’s extensive network, it greatly expands our market’s connectedness and heightens Greece’s interest in and significance of the Chinese market, which is expanding annually.
Passengers travelling to Athens can connect to 30 more cities around Athens under the agreement signed by the airline. Greek airlines will operate the connecting flights.
