Etihad Airways, the Abu Dhabi based airline has already announced plans to launch flights to 2 destinations in India – Kozhikode and Trivandrum. Brilliant journalist from Deccan Herald Lavpreet Kaur sat down with General Manager to Indian Subcontinent region of Etihad Airways Salil Nath and discussed about Indian market. Let us have a look at what insights Mr Nath shared.
Etihad to Kozhikode and Trivandrum
Etihad Airways which currently operates to 8 Indian cities will add flights to 2 more destinations in India – Kozhikode and Trivandrum. Let us have a look at details of both these flights.
Abu Dhabi to Kozhikode
With effect from January 1, Etihad will start operating daily flights on Abu Dhabi to Kozhikode route. The airline will deploy Airbus A320 on this route. Here are the timings :
EY 248 : Departs Abu Dhabi at 14:40 hrs and arrives Calicut at 19:55 hrs
EY 249 : Departs Calicut at 21:30 hrs and arrives at Abu Dhabi Airport at 00:05 hrs of next day
Abu Dhabi to Trivandrum
On the same date i.e. January 1, Etihad will launch flights between Abu Dhabi International Airport and Trivandrum International Airport as well. Same operations – Daily flights with Airbus A320.
Here are the timings :
EY 292 : The A320 departs Abu Dhabi at 03:20 hrs and arrives at Trivandrum at 09:00 hrs
EY 293 : After a 1 hour 5 minutes halt, the aircraft departs Trivandrum at 10:05 hrs and reaches Abu Dhabi at 12:55 hrs
Both routes will be operated by Airbus A320 fleet. The airline has 13 aircraft in its fleet with currently 12 in service. They are configured with 8 Business class and 150 Economy class seats. 2 Airbus A320s have 16 Business class and 120 Economy class seats.
Heathrow & JFK most preferred destination
Most of the traffic carried by Etihad Airways or any Middle East carrier constitutes of connecting traffic onwards either to Africa, Europe or America. In case of Etihad, Indian travellers shows major love to 2 destinations – Heathrow and New York JFK.
Etihad is currently bringing back its Airbus A380 fleet. Currently, both Heathrow and JFK saw deployment of Airbus A380 jet. Airbus A380 of Etihad Airways has 2 Residence suites, 9 First Class Suites, 70 Business Class and 417 Economy Class seats.
The airline is consistently boosting capacity and is looking to introduce new destinations apart from India as well. It is considering flights to Nice on the Cote d’Azur.
Indian market by Etihad lens
As per Etihad, Indian market is fiercely competitive. Indian travellers are looking at options for international travel. For Etihad, it is one of the largest and most significant markets. Etihad recently completed 20 years of operations. Currently, the airline operates to 8 Indian destinations. On January 1, this number will increase to 10.
Etihad and Air Arabia Joint Venture airline – Air Arabia Abu Dhabi also has a strong presence in Indian market. Both Etihad and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi jointly operates 232 weekly flights to 10 Indian cities.
