You are travelling on an aircraft peacefully, and suddenly, the passenger seating next to you starts screaming at you and attacks you. Unwanted experience, right? Well, something similar happened on Qantas flight from Bali to Melbourne.
Unruly Passenger on Qantas Bali – Melbourne Flight
On 30 December, Qantas Flight QF 46 was operating from Bali Benpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport in Indonesia to Melbourne International Airport in Australia. A Boeing 737 registered as VH-XZM was operating the daily service.
After takeoff, mid-air, a passenger became out of control. As reported by 9News, the passener violently erupted on fellow passengers. He was agitated, screaming and shouting on nearby seated passengers. He attacked two to three fellow passengers. When other passengers and crew members tried to pin him down, he threatened them. The man’s age was 28. He hurled at the cabin crew saying that if you dont get away from me, I will f*** you. At one moment, he asked for a kiss. On another instance, he yelled that he will call his mom and dad.
Overpowered by the Crew
The unruly passsenger attacked two to three passengers. After this, crew along with the help of some passengers overpowered him. It took the support of five people to pin hi down to the aisle ground. He was then restrained. His hands and legs were tied. Crew took turns and held him for more than 4 hours. The Boeing 737 landed at Melbourne Airport at 06:40 AM. Upon landing, the unruly passenger was handed over to Australian Federal Police.
The Federal Police said that they will question the passenger and then take him for medical test. The police is investigating the incident and hence, no charges have been laid on the said passenger right now.
Qantas in its statement said that it is fully cooperating with security authorities to manage this incident. It added that the safety of passengers and crew is number one priority for the airline. For unruly passengers, it has zero tolerance.
200 Incidents Per Month
Following the repeated number of such incidents in the region, flag carrier of Australian Neighbour, Air New Zealand has also asked its passengers to show respect to fellow passengers. Air New Zealand Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer, Captain David Morgan said that the region is seeing a concerning trend over the time. Number of passengers involved in unruly acts onboard an aircraft is constantly increasing. There are nearly 200 such reports on a monthly basis.
Captain Morgan said that majority of the passengers are fantastic. But there are a few, who does not respect the decorum of a flight. He requested all the passengers to follow the cabin crew instructions, avoid any verbal fighting and being disruptive. Physical abuse onboard aircraft is not at all acceptable and the airline will take it sincerely.
