With introduction of flight services between Fiji and Canberra, Canberra International Airport is expecting direct flights to New Zealand cities Auckland and Wellington.
Canberra Airport to connect Auckland and Wellington
Recently, direct flight services were introduced between Nadi Islands and Canberra. Fiji Airways started the twice weekly flight with Boeing 737 MAX. From 1 October, Fiji Airways will upgrade the 2X weekly service to 3X weekly.
Managing Director of Canberra Airport Stephen Byron said that this is just the starting. Flight to Nadi Islands is just a building block. There is more to come.
In an interview to Karryon, he said that building the first block of a building is hardest but its the most important. With this new service from Fiji, it seems that the airport has climbed the mountain. The airport authorities are so grateful to Fiji Airways for being their partner airline.
The Managing Director is expecting various other international flight services across Tasman region within next 12 months. He emphasised on Auckland and Wellington.
Auckland and Wellington
Talking to Karryon, Mr Byron said we would love to have a thrice weekly flight to Wellington and a 4 times weekly flight to Auckland. Other pacific destinations are also on the cards.
He also expressed interest in Singapore International Airlines operations. He think that the big boy in the town – Singapore International Airlines will be back to Canberra International Airport in next 12 months. If the Singaporean giant airline fails to do so, Qantas will do the same because the airline is getting deliveries of new aircraft. So, within next 12 months, SIA will love to re-enter the Australian capital.
Along with Singapore International Airlines, Stephen Byron is hoping to have Qatar Airways operating at Canberra Airport as well. The airline has however been restricted by Australia bilateral air service agreement. Qatar Airways have an option to add 2 additional flights to either Adelaide or Canberra. It will be interesting to see what Qatar comes up with? We will get the confirmation of this within next 6 months.
