Noida International Airport is all set to be operational by the end of 2023. Already, airlines have started showing their interest in the upcoming airport. In November 2023, IndiGo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) to be the launch carrier. NIAL is the airport operator.
Akasa Air Commits to Noida Airport
India’s youngest airline Akasa Air has signed an agreement with Noida International Airport Limited for the commencement of operations. The airline ensured that it would be operating scheduled commercial flights from Noida Airport. This will help the airline connect Delhi NCR to Tier 2 & 3 cities in India.
Akasa & NIAL inscribed this agreement on the sidelines of Wings India 2024. Noida International Airport Limited is one of the exhibitors at the airshow. With this agreement, two airlines have committed to start operations from the new airport. In November, IndiGo signed a similar deal to be the launch airline. IndiGo will perform the maiden commercial landing at Noida International Airport.
The Founder and CEO of Akasa Air, Vinay Dube, praised the Noida International Airport as evidence of the government’s commitment to improving aviation infrastructure in support of India’s emergence as a major aviation center. He emphasized the airline’s significant interest in working with the airport to create a wide-ranging network that connects all parts of India. He is eagerly awaiting the airport’s much-anticipated opening.
Chief Executive Officer of Noida International Airport Christoph Schnellmann welcomed its new airline partner. He said that this is an important step as the airport project progresses. He ensured that the airport authority will dedicatedly serve the Delhi-NCR & Western Uttar Pradesh region. Praising Akasa Air, he said that it is one of the fastest-growing airlines in India, connecting all Tier cities across India.
The airport authorities are anticipating launch of commercial operations in October 2024. Initially, the airport will start operations with 65 daily flights. Out of these, 62 will be domestic, 2 will be international and 1 will be a freighter flight. Last year, Noida International Airport secured its IATA Code: DXN.
Officials at Noida International Airport are confident of meeting the deadline. Currently, Airports Authority of India (AAI) is installing equipment on the 3.9 kilometer long runway. The terminal building’s structure is complete, awaiting interior work, and the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower’s structure is finished with the glass facade in progress. Noida International Airport Ltd (NIAL) officials indicate progress on runway leveling, with focus shifting to interior work. The first 17km boundary wall is constructed, and preparation for the outer wall of equal length is underway.
Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of Noida International Airport, announced that the airport will be equipped with modern and advanced technologies. Majority of passengers at the airport will be exempt from removing electronic and liquid items from their hand baggage during security checks. The deployment of advanced CT X-ray machines in most security lanes makes this convenience possible.
In its initial phase, NIA will feature one runway and terminal, accommodating 12 million passengers annually. Following the fourth phase, the airport’s capacity will increase to 70 million passengers per year.
