Yesterday, there was a chaos at Goa Airport as an aircraft belonging to Air India Express suffered a technical issue. Later, the same aircraft operated the flight, but after a wait time of a long 18 hours.
Technical issue at Goa Airport
Air India Express flight IX 839 was about to fly from Goa Dabolm International Airport to Dubai International Airport. Passengers about to travel were totalled at 149. The aircraft registered as VT-AXM was expected to take off from Goa Airport at 01:10 AM in dark hours.
Passenger boarded the aircraft on 12:30 AM and then, the doors were closed. The captain of the aircraft then announced that there is a minor technical glitch in the aircraft and hence, it will take some 15-20 minutes to rectify. Engineers were working on it and there was no update from the airline to the passengers.
After some time, the captain asked all the passengers including children and senior citizens to deboard the aircraft. All 149 passengers deboarded the aircraft and returned to the terminal building.
The airline in its statement claimed that operational reasons caused the flight delay. They were given not a single update till 05:30 AM. On 05:30 AM, they were told that the flight has been rescheduled to depart at 04:30 PM. Later, it was rescheduled at 06:15 PM.
The airline flew technicians and spare parts from nearby airports to rectify the technical issue which arose in the Boeing 737. The airline asked the passengers to show patience and understanding because of the situation.
No food, no accommodation
Passengers were aware of the idea that the situation is way beyond the control of the airline. But they became short-tempered, when the airline ground staff refused to provide any food and accommodation to the passengers. In case of such a long wait, it was expected that the airline provide an accommodation to all the passengers. There were many senior citizens and children, who were hungry. There was a lady with a toddler. She was driven to tears as she was not familiar with the airport.
After so much chaos, in evening, the airline staff provided water and biryani to all the passengers before the flight.
Takeoff after 18 hours
The flight which was supposed to take off at 01:10 AM in the dark actually took off in dark of the evening. After a long wait of 18 hours, the aircraft was finally airborne at 07:00 PM. The aircraft landed at Dubai International Airport at 08:43 PM.
Passengers onboard the flight demanded the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation and Directorate General of Civil Aviation to take action against the airline in this case of delays.
Recently, Ministry of Civil Aviation in one of its statements said that it will review all the guidelines of Civil Aviation Requirements and will make sure that passengers get proper accommodation & food facilities in case of any delay or cancellation. If there are any provisions restricting airlines to do so, the Ministry will take action by removing them and make civil aviation more passenger friendly so that airlines cannot benefit from the loopholes.
